In 2002, the Department of Health and Ageing funded a project called the Evidence Based (Palliative Care) Project to collect Australia’s palliative care literature from 1980, published and unpublished, that was not available through common bibliographic databases. Through the work of many clinicians, researchers and informatics staff, an anthology was collated and made available in September 2004 in a searchable database on a website called CareSearch. This project continued until June 2006 when the Knowledge Network in palliative care project took responsibility for the CareSearch website.
As a result of the interest and use of this resource a second project was undertaken. This was the scoping study for a Palliative Care Knowledge Network. This project looked at whether an online network of resource and information to support palliative care in Australia was needed and whether it was feasible and cost effective. The report and business plan developed as part of this project were presented to the Department of Health and Ageing and led to the funding of the Knowledge Network in palliative care project.
