Create Your Own Dementia PubMed Search

These instructions will help you create your own dementia search in PubMed on a topic of your choice. You will be able to search the whole PubMed database for articles on your own topic within the broad area of dementia, using the general Dementia Search Filter.

We have provided a demonstration of steps detailed below.

Search for your own topic within dementia

Let's use the example of bright light therapy in the broad general dementia context. Results will include references that are about bright light therapy in all literature about dementia (they will not be restricted to the palliative care context).

Instructions

Step 1: Click on this link: Run the Dementia Search Filter in PubMed now
Step 2: Click on Advanced, below the search box
Step 3: Type your topic search, i.e. bright light therapy, into the top Builder box
Step 4: Identify the 'set number' for Step 1 above (e.g. #1)
Step 5: Click on the word Add next to that search to enter it in the PubMed search box; it will appear in the box below your own topic search and be automatically combined with it
Step 6: Select Search

You can substitute your own search terms in Step 3 to create your own PubMed Search.

Search for your own topic within dementia and palliative care

We have created a set of topic searches that are relevant to palliative care and dementia care on the Dementia PubMed Topic Searches page.

Is there another topic you would have liked to search?

If so, use the instructions below to search for your topic restricted to palliative care and dementia, using the Palliative Care and Dementia Search Filters combined. In this example we will use the topic of spirituality, this time in the palliative care and dementia combined context.

Instructions

Step 1: Click on this link: Run the Dementia and Palliative Care Search Filters combined in PubMed now
Step 2: Click on Advanced, below the search box
Step 3: Type your topic search, i.e. spirituality, into the top Builder box
Step 4: Identify the 'set number' for Step 1 above (e.g. #1)
Step 5: Click on the word Add next to that search to enter it in the PubMed search box; it will appear in the box below your own topic search and be automatically combined with it
Step 6: Select Search

Results will include references that are about spirituality for dementia patients, restricted to the palliative care context.

Substitute your own search terms in Step 3 to create your own PubMed Search.

Having trouble?

Make sure that you type your search terms in the PubMed 'search' box, and not the CareSearch 'search' box. This mistake could happen if you forget to click on the ‘Run the Dementia and Palliative Care Search Filters combined in PubMed now' step in these instructions.

CareSearch has received two reports that home internet providers restricted their access to PubMed. If PubMed is not behaving as it should, or if you receive an unusual message such as 'access denied', please contact your supplier to enable access.
