Grief and bereavement

PSA offers online learning modules for pharmacists on Supporting people with their grief and bereavement. Pharmacists and pharmacy assistants will often have contact with grieving people in the first weeks and months after a loss when they return medicines or pursue their own health care. Pharmacists can support bereaved people, help identify people who may be suffering prolonged and complex grief and provide advice for where they might go for help with grief.

After completing the activity, pharmacists will be able to:

  • Recognise signs and symptoms that someone might be experiencing difficulties with their grief
  • Define grief disorders and identify risk factors for people who may benefit from specialist support
  • Describe communication strategies for responding to people who are grieving
  • Discuss the contemporary evidence base for supporting grief and grief disorders
  • Identify referral pathways for grief support and specialist bereavement services.
