People will sometimes experience financial difficulties. It is important to get the help and advice that is needed at an early stage. Different organisations can help:
- Most banks have financial advisors
- Many unions have advisors to help with superannuation or personal leave entitlements
- Personal accountants can be an important source of advice
- A social worker from the hospital, palliative care service or community health service can also provide advice.
It may be important to ensure that the person who is ill and their partner both have access to bank accounts. This helps to ensure financial security for both. Also consider an Enduring Power of Attorney. This legal option allows a person to appoint someone to make financial decisions on their behalf. They can operate bank accounts, pay any bills and sell or buy property or shares on their behalf.
The Australian Government provides financial help to people when they are ill, injured or have a disability. Information can be found through Centrelink. An assessment is required for this assistance.
