This study contains an analysis of the incidence of cancer and the mortality rate among Indigenous people in Qld. It examines the type of cancers that occur and why Indigenous people have poorer survival rates than non-Indigenous people. Can obtain from Queensland Government Health.  

Providing Palliative Care for Aboriginal Patients (abstract)
Fried O. Australian Family Physician, Nov.2000 Vol.29.No.11.pp.1035-38.
Discusses the fact that many Indigenous people are ill-informed about palliative care and either lack proper access to it or the service isn’t culturally appropriate. Suggests the way forward is to work with Aboriginal Health Workers to ensure correct steps are put in place to enable Indigenous people to want to access mainstream palliative care.

Palliative care in a multicultural society: perceptions of health care professionals

Research into how to improve cross-cultural palliative care as suggested by care providers. From this come issues such as difficulties faced by care providers and the need for educational programs for care providers. This later issue is seen to be the key to the provision of culturally appropriate care to patients and their families from all cultural backgrounds.

National Palliative Care Strategy
In October 2000 the Australian Health Ministers' Advisory Council endorsed the National Palliative Care Strategy. The Strategy is the policy document that the Australian Government and state and territory governments use to guide palliative care policy development and service delivery across Australia.

Palliative Care Strategy 2005-2009
The Department of Health and Community Services identified the need for future direction in palliative care and successfully gained funding to achieve this objective from the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing in mid 2003. The Palliative Care Strategy was subsequently developed as the result of many initiatives. These have included extensive stakeholder input across the Northern Territory, recent and past service reviews, the NT Palliative Care Policy (1999), community advocacy, and local and national palliative care research.
