Palliative Filter Syntax

This technical note is not for the faint hearted! It is a transparent record of the URL syntax used to represent the palliative filter in CareSearch PubMed Topic Searches.

This search will retrieve a very large number of records that will be relevant to palliative care. This can be used to restrict a particular topic of broader interest to the palliative literature, as CareSearch has done in its PubMed Topic Searches. For instructions on how to do this with other topics you are interested in, see Create Your Own PubMed Topic Search. If you already know how to do this, you may wish to run the PubMed palliative filter now.

Technically this search uses Concepts 2, 4 and 5 as described in Technical Notes, where Concept 2 retrieves references from Medline, and Concept 4 NOT Concept 5 retrieves articles from PubMed. A colour key provides a reference point for the different components of the search.

Colour Key
Pink = The phrase that PubMed provides to initiate a real time PubMed search
Red = The palliative filter developed through published research (Concept 2)
Orange = Modified palliative filter (Concept 4)
Purple = Exclusion of Medline records (Concept 5)
Light Blue = Restrict to English (Additional Concept)
Note that all key Boolean operators are in black to highlight the separation of key concepts.
