Changing Your Care Approach

There are a number of ways that health professionals can enhance their understanding and skills in providing culturally responsive palliative care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. You can attend training opportunities made available within your health service or through your professional associations. You can apply for a PEPA placement (as described in the Developing your Knowledge and Skills section of this Hub). Learning options are outlined below.

Policy and Guidelines

PEPA's Cultural Considerations Providing end of life care for Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples provides essential information for health professionals that will enable them to deliver the best cultural care during the end of life journey for Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people.
Providing culturally appropriate palliative care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples: Resource kit from the National Palliative Care Program's Indigenous Palliative Care Project, provides strategies and training material to support health staff in providing culturally appropriate palliative care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This resource kit includes Practice Principles, the Resource, Discussion Paper, and a Course.
