Objectives
The Australian population rate with asbestos related diseases [ARD] is likely to peak in the year 2017 Mortality from asbestosis and mesothelioma is rising. From 1950-1970, Australia was the highest per capita user of asbestos in the world but little psycho-social research was undertaken.

Methods
Data has been obtained through 140 clinical records of the Asbestos Diseases Society of South Australia [ADSS]. Survey data using the WHOQOL-Bref and the RAND Social Support is being conducted during February and March 2009. Analysis will examine the relationship of socio-demographic, clinical and client QOL with their social support.

Findings
Most clients are male [84%] and more than half are aged over 70, with 28% aged over 80 years. Many had mesothelioma [42%]. A high proportion was born in the UK [29] and was in the Trades [52%]. A high number [75%] identified a spouse as carer. The majority sought information [67%], support [51%] and legal advice [45%]. Those with a fatal condition [72%] overwhelmingly present at the agency when newly diagnosed [p=«0.001]. Age is a significant predictor [p=.023] with 66% of younger clients [<65] presenting when newly diagnosed. Quality of life findings will be presented following analysis of survey data.

Discussion
People with mesothelioma are generally older when finally diagnosed with their disease. They are often in long-standing marital relationships and wish to stay at home with supportive care from a community agency. Their quality of life will be discussed within this context.
