Evolving palliative care – The nurse practitioner role

Aim
To provide an overall picture of how a nurse practitioner in palliative care can work within a consultative service delivery model. Will discuss issues around the challenges and also present the positive highlights of this experience.

Background
A review of the provision of palliative care services in Western Australia in 2005 demonstrated that there is inequitable access to palliative care services for consumers. There is only one designated palliative care NP position in WA which is at Royal Perth Hospital.

Discussion
The introduction of a palliative care nurse practitioner will offer an innovative solution to equity in access to services. The practitioner will have an expanded scope of practice which involves patient assessment, ordering and interpreting diagnostics and prescribing medication according to clinical practice protocols. The position is in its infancy, but this poster presentation highlights the The research we have been conducting into this experiment shows benefits to patients, families and staff. This includes changes to the ambience on the ward and the dynamics between staff, their patients and families. many potential benefits of the role and the future plans.

Conclusion
NP roles within Australia are increasing. With new and innovative ideas and role development, it is essential that all members of health service delivery and consumers are aware of the role and scope of practice of the palliative care nurse practitioner. This pathway is a safe, effective and versatile model of care.
