ExcerptThis project, "Factors Associated with Home Deaths", is funded by the Australian Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing under the National Palliative Care Caring Communities Program and is currently being conducted at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Central Sydney Area Health Service (CSAHS), due for completion in mid 2006.
Project Aims:
Given that many people continue to die in institutional care despite the fact that most state their preference is to die at home, this project aims to provide a better understanding of factors associated with home deaths. Results will have importance for clinical decision making and service planning.
Method:
The project will identify patient, carer, disease, and other factors related to place of death in a population-based sample of terminally ill cancer residents in the Central Sydney Area Health Service (CSAHS).
Data collection will be by means of interviews with the 60 carers (next-of-kin) of cancer patients who have died in CSAHS. A structured questionnaire and semi-structured interview guide has been developed from the literature, and ratified by an expert committee.
Discussion:
Data collection has yet to commence. The discussion proposed for presentation at the conference will focus on the process of the research, including obstacles encountered in negotiating privacy requirements and ethical approval to obtain a population- based sample of participants, as well as detail of the questionnaire data items and interview guide being used for the study.
