Caritas Christi Hospice in Kew has been providing educational services to palliative care professionals from Japan, Thailand and Hong Kong for over twenty years. The international educational program at Caritas responds to the needs of international communities by:
a) Educating international students about the values and practices embodied in our palliative care program;
b) Building links with overseas institutions;
c) Focusing on the needs of members of particular Asian communities both within Australia and overseas.
The main activities are:
1. Regular clinical observation programs;
2. Short visits to Caritas;
3. Occasional one-day visits;
4. Collaboration with the Melbourne Language Centre;
5. An informal exchange program with Heiwa Hospital, Japan. Sessions are conducted in either English or Japanese.
Staffing: Medical staff, clinical educators and a Japanese coordinator. Costs are set at a level which is accessible to visitors but still generates revenue for Caritas. Heiwa Hospital The Japanese coordinator has regularly lectured at Heiwa Hospital and other institutions in Kagawa prefecture. The head doctor from Heiwa Hospital has visited Caritas. Palliative Care is in still in its infancy in Kagawa, despite the aging population, so the assistance of Caritas has been greatly valued. There is great scope to build on this relationship in the future.
