Bereavement education in a group setting is provided by Eastern Palliative Care as part of its stepped care approach to bereavement intervention. Evaluation and review of the Bereavement Education Group was undertaken in June 2017 and a new format launched in February 2018. This paper will provide rationale for the review, detail on the review process and evaluation results of the new and revised service.
The new service aims to provide appropriate support and information across a range of clients of varied ages, types of loss, bereavement experiences and grief reactions, to ensure information provided is up to date and relevant and the environment was safe and supportive.
All material for the information sessions including the presentation and resources were reviewed for current relevance and appropriateness to a laymen audience. Previous evaluations were consulted to identify areas of improvement.
Information gathered above combined with feedback from previous session facilitators and an evidence based understanding of the needs of grieving people were used to rewrite the program and change provision of this service.
Initial quantitative and qualitative data obtained indicates that the new Bereavement Information Sessions are better addressing the needs of attendees, providing a safe, supportive environment and effective education and meeting client expectations.
