Biography:
Joshua Cohen is a palliative care nurse practitioner working at Calvary Health Care Kogarah in Sydney. Joshua’s two passions is the delivery of specialist palliative care into residential aged care, trying to fill the gap both in clinical care and service provision in his role as a nurse practitioner; and teaching palliative care nursing throughout Asia when the opportunity arises. Josh has been working in palliative care for over a decade completing his Masters in Palliative Care at Flinders University in 2013, followed by the completion of his Master of Nursing, Nurse Practitioner at the University of Sydney IN 2017
Background
“Becoming a nurse practitioner (NP) is not for the feint hearted”, or at least that’s what I had heard as I enrolled in the master of nursing; Nurse Practitioner course back in 2015. The complexity of transitioning from registered nurse to a registered nurse with endorsement explained through the sharing of a personal story promotes engagement from the listener and reflection from the author.
Aim
To discuss the facilitators and barriers of transitioning to NP through personal reflection of the lived experience.
Method
A narrative of a personal journal. This presentation will reflect on and offer insight into the facilitators and barriers that made the journey to an endorsed Palliative care Nurse Practitioner a story worth sharing. The lure of storytelling needs no explaining; through stories comes both enquiry and the potential to lead the listener to a similar end.
Discussion
Pieces of the jigsaw to NP transition will be threaded together, through the discussion of key moments, personal and professional, that propelled the story forward to its completion.
Facilitators include hearing about fellow NP experience of the process, medical mentorship/engagement and University flexibility accounting for personal situations
Barriers will consider individual NP work place institutional lack of knowledge around NP roles, the constant possibility of change to prescribing goal posts and the ongoing education/justification required to health professionals around NP scopes of practice.
Conclusion/Reflection
The road to NP endorsement is complex and currently a road very seem unwilling to take. That nurses seem hesitant to journey here will be reflected upon, questioning why this is the case and how we can consider ways to make the process a more accessible one for willing clinicians.
