Memorial paddle out ceremonies in the surfing culture – An investigation into historical and cultural significance

Introduction: There is an increasing trend in surfing culture of using a paddle out ceremony as a memorial ritual. The ceremony structure consists of paddling out into ocean and making a circle with joined hands. Splashing water, throwing flower leis and saying prayers are also a common feature.

Objectives: To examine the history and cultural significance of the paddle out ceremony and develop a greater understanding of the symbolism and structure used. Approach: To date, very limited literature exists about paddle out ceremonies, particularly on the historical and cultural aspects. In December 2013 the author travelled to Hawaii to listen to the stories from elders within the surfing community and surf historians.

Practice Implications: This initial investigation aims to  give enough background information to create a larger research model. By examining the reasons why people internationally find this type of ceremony a positive experience may assist in understanding what elements are essential in helping people during grief and bereavement.

Conclusions: The main elements that exist within the paddle out ceremony are connection, community, sharing, symbolism and celebration in the ocean environment.
