Creating confidence in competence

The Silver Chain Competency framework was first established in 2006. The competencies have a specific pathway of education and subsequent assessment and all staff have training plans which outline the educational requirements of their specific area of work. The Framework continues to evolve supporting the requirements of the ever- changing needs of domiciliary healthcare, reinforced by current evidence and best practice.

18 months ago the Hospice Care Service commenced the development of specific palliative care competencies. Currently the competency pain assessment tool which extensively examines elements of palliative competency has been completed.

This presentation will outline the process and methodology for the evaluation of confidence pre and post the implementation of the competency assessment tools.

Evidence will be presented showing how competence assessment provokes learning and affects confidence in health care providers working in the palliative community setting, thereby improving the quality of care provided to those living with a life limiting illness.
