Professional Connect recognises that throughout Australia there are groups and teams contributing to palliative care practice and development. CareSearch can support these Communities of Practice (CoPs) by facilitating virtual engagement.
A Community of Practice (CoP) is a voluntary network of people who share information and work together to build knowledge and expertise to solve problems for the community involved. They are a form of work group.
When members of these communities are not physically located together, access to "virtual" supports can enable communication and enhance functioning. The following resources can be provided for palliative care CoPs within Australia:
- Public page: Providing a description of the group and its purposes
- Intranet page: A home page for the group only available to registered members
- Shared calendar: Online calendar that registered members can add to share important meetings
- Forum (also known as a blog)
- Newsletter capacity for your CoP.
The COMPAC Project provides an example of a palliative care CoP. This involved public pages and pages restricted to team members and to members of the reference group. There were also public and registered member forums.
