Procedures for certification of death and reporting to the Coroner vary between states and territories. The National Coroner's Information System has information on the coronial process.
Important practical considerations for palliative care are that:
- Arrangements for certifying death will need to be planned ahead for patients dying an expected death at home.
- It is unusual that an expected death will need to be reported to the coroner, however, if this is at all likely, the family should be advised so that they are prepared.
