Issues for people experiencing homelessness
Palliative Care
It is important that people who are experiencing homelessness, and who are unwell, are able to access the help that they need. They may not be able to do this themselves, and may need help from homeless organizations, or from family and friends if they are in touch.
Many homeless people will not have made a will. If they do have a will it could be one that was prepared years ago and is perhaps lost. Having a will can help in many ways. It is important for locating next of kin, and in decisions regarding care after death.
Not everyone wants to share information with their next of kin or contact person. If this is the case ask for confidentiality with health professionals, and ask to be involved in decisions about making contact with anyone. A social worker may be able to help with any arrangements that are needed if you do not want anyone involved.
Resources that can be accessed
Both the Homelessness Australia and The City of Sydney websites have information that may be of help.
Nursing care
Many Nursing services will work alongside services for the homeless to help people who may need care. The Royal District Nursing Society in Victoria has information on their website that gives examples of how they help.
Community Health Services
Social Workers are able to help with some issues and can be contacted at local community health centres. You can find details in the State Resources pages.
Financial Support
Centrelink has many services that can help people who are homeless.
