Having information means making choices may be easier. It can also mean being an equal partner in making decisions. This in turn can help to reduce fear and uncertainty, and may help regain a sense of control.
Different people need different information, sometimes given in different ways at different times.
This may depend upon:
- Who they are
- Their outlook on life and on serious illness
- Their culture or upbringing.
For example, when someone is ill, their need for information may differ slightly from their family carer. Other important people in their life may also need information. In some cultures the family of the person who is ill receives information about them.
It is important to have an opportunity to find out any information that is required. Patients and family carers can ask health professionals for information.
