  About PCC4U

The PCC4U Project is an initiative of the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, through its National Palliative Care Program. The PCC4U project aims to:
  • Promote the inclusion in all health care training of the role of palliative care and its principles and practice in the care of dying people; and,
  • Support the inclusion of palliative care education as an integral part of all medical, nursing, and allied health undergraduate training, and ongoing professional development.

The specific activities being undertaken to achieve the goals of the PCC4U project are based on the recommendations made in earlier phases of the PCC4U project, and include six main components:

  1. Active promotion of the uptake of the PCC4U resources in all universities in Australia which offer medical, nursing, and allied health undergraduate training;
    • An implementation schedule has been developed, such that all universities are approached by 2009. A range of promotional strategies are being used to maximize uptake, including the endorsement by professional and regulatory bodies; case studies; and mentoring by other members of a developing academic network in palliative care.
    • Ongoing support provided to sites implementing the PCC4U resources, through activities including an introductory workshop, curriculum mapping, and tailoring of implementation strategies. Support for these activities is provided by a National Project Manager.
  1. Maintenance and nurturing of the networks that have developed between participating universities and their faculties;
    • Activities include involvement as mentors, and development of shared teaching sites and discussion forums. A range of targeted communication strategies are being employed in this process.
  1. Extend the networks to include the universities and faculties which take up the curriculum over the course of the project;
    • All new sites are included in the activities of the networks.
  1. Develop strategies for the ongoing sustainability of the PCC4U project;
    • Workshops designed to develop teaching skills in palliative care will be held at key points throughout the project. Ongoing linkages are being developed with professional and regulatory bodies, and a National Conference will be held toidentify strategies for ongoing sustainability.
  1. Maintain the existing newsletter for stakeholders and information website.
    • The newsletter will continue to be published quarterly, and the website will be further developed  to include features such as a discussion forum for academic and clinical staff involved in  teaching palliative care.
  1. Evaluate the outcomes of the project in achieving key outcomes. Indictors include:
    • learning outcomes for students who participate in the program
    • curriculum outcomes, in terms of the extent to the principles have been incorporated and factors which have influenced the uptake
    • academic outcomes, in terms of usefulness, effectiveness and of the resources, and factors which influence these outcomes
    • system outcomes, in terms of networks, partnerships, and other factors which influence outcomes.
